That title is pretty self explanatory, but I’m still going to write the post.
The drag show was at the union on UNI’s campus, and it was to support UNI Proud. There were 15 or 20 performers (a few main ones and some one timers) and it was a true, full-on drag show.
The cloud-like blob in the blurry picture above is Ruby. She’s won tons of drag awards and served as our emcee. Sorry about the terrible photo. My phone camera sucks and we were really far away. If you click on it, you might be able to see it better.
There were five or six featured ladies, and all were really impressive. It take a lot of courage to get up in front of people, knowing they’re judging you, and they all did great. They performed songs from GLEE, Rihanna, Nicki Manaj and, of course, Cher. A large drag queen (as Barbie) and a scrawny girl (as Ken) performed Aqua’s “Barbie Girl.” Good times.
Some of the girls (not drags) got involved too. Five of them did a Backstreet Boys performance. They learned the dance to “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” (yea, I had to look up the name to the song), and it took me back to “the olden days.” I put “olden days” in quotes because, well, I’m 21.
The show had amazing attendance. The whole union was filled. Of course, a lot of the audience was made up of people who were walking through wondering what the hell was going on.
A lot of people’s worlds were opened up to a new experience. UNI Proud put on a great fundraiser–congratulations. It was a fun night and we’ll see if UNI lets them do that in the union again next year…
